A GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE
CALL FOR ARTISTS:
October 24, 2009
2-5 pm, Library Square, Salt Lake City
Concurrent with over 1400 events in 100 nations

Our planet is in a state of crisis. Climate-related changes are happening faster than anticipated. To prevent runaway climate chaos, we must turn around rising atmospheric CO2 immediately, reducing levels to 350 parts per million (ppm)—current levels are at 388. We must end fossil fuel use by mid-century. This will take unprecedented international cooperation. The time of bickering and stonewalling by our policymakers must end.
350.org, a coalition of climate justice activists, has called for a planetary day of action on October 24th. Creative people in various disciplines—such as visual artists, poets, dancers—will express the urgency about climate crisis and the need to reduce CO2 levels to 350 ppm, in a participatory event for all ages. This is leading up to the world summit on climate in Copenhagen this December, to send a clear message to our leaders—they must enact meaningful legislation before it is too late.
- We are calling for visual artists to create costumes, placards, signs—anything they can wear or carry at our local Salt Lake event—to work the crowd & raise awareness in creative, inspiring, engaging ways.
- Projects include: kids' poster contest, poetry reading, participatory art, and more
- Themes could include: 350, tipping points, feedback loops, recycling/reclaiming used materials
- For ideas/more info: watch the short film "Wake Up, Freak Out": http://wakeupfreakout.org/film/tipping.html
