CLEAN ENERGY DECLARATION

Whereas we value life and health above all things, and desire to foster their resilience and persistence through future generations;

Whereas the extraction, combustion and use of fossil fuels cause highly undesirable effects on the health of humans, on the ecosystems in which they are embedded and not least upon the world’s climate;

Whereas our use of fossil fuels contributes to undesirable effects on our social and economic well-being, including addictive dependence on oil; unrestrained growth; urban sprawl; the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few; and the motivation for war;

Whereas fossil fuels are non-renewable resources for which alternatives must inevitably be found in the near or not-so-distant future if we are to continue to meet human needs;

Whereas we are surrounded by unlimited natural clean energy, and know how to capture and use it with existing technologies and practices;

Whereas our capacity to more efficiently and affordably capture and use clean energy is sure to grow and be refined with further practice and committed intent;

Whereas we desire to address the challenges facing us rather than pass them to future generations;

Therefore:

We wholly commit ourselves to a worldwide 80% reduction in the use of fossil fuels and a corresponding 80% reduction in human-caused greenhouse gases, both by year 2020.

In light of which:

We demand of our leaders policies in alignment with this commitment;

We invite our fellow citizens to join in our commitment and take action accordingly; and

We propose, as the first among many other actions, electing responsible and responsive leaders and holding them to account for policies that affirm life; and taking leadership to align our use of resources, our purchases, our social interaction, and our political participation with our deep commitment to life and its continued thriving on our world.

Let it be so resolved and agreed upon by all who will.
