resource: Hansen Lecture Chapel Hill Feb 1 2010
James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, delivered this presentation on February 1st 2010 at UNC, Chapel Hill as the Frey Foundation Distinguished Visiting Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences. Full audio recording( 90MB)
He presented the scientific arguments documenting global climate change over time as well as the impact of human contributions to it. Then he discussed why he opposes the "cap-and-trade" policy proposal to regulate carbon emissions, and favors instead a "fee and dividend" proposal that would tax carbon and distribute the tax revenues to the public so citizens could make their homes and businesses more energy-efficient and make use of alternatives to non-fossil fuel energy. What a fantastic presentation, and I encourage everyone to take the time to listen and scroll through as well. It is important to deliver this message to more people and help everyone realize what is happening to our planet and what we need to push for. We must push for a fee and dividend approach instead of cap and trade as a solution.
