Introduction - - Ingrid Nygaard, M.D. , Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine, University of Utah

The world's scientific organizations are in agreement, we are entering a man made climate crisis.  The Utah climate will be much hotter and with greater extremes, especially drought.  Global health consequences will be unprecedented.  Worldwide food production will likely drop significantly, affecting price and availability even in Utah.  This climate crisis will have direct and indirect, predictable impacts on public health in Utah.

In May 2009, The Lancet, one of the world's most prestigious medical journals, released a report in conjunction with the University College London, that identifies climate change as "the biggest global health threat of the 21st century … put[ing] the lives and well being of billions of people at increased risk.”    On Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 2 pm in Classroom A, University of Utah School of Medicine, Dr. Brian Moench, President, Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment (UPHE), was joined by
members of UPHE, the Utah Medical Association, and the faculties of the University of Utah School of Medicine and Utah State University to address the question:  What will the climate crisis mean for public health … our health in Utah?   Health professionals and the public were invited to attend.
